Secrets of A Modern Painter: Oil Painting Video Timelapse Aerial Landscape Part 1

Oil Painting Video Timelapse Aerial Landscape Part 1

Land is divided, towns built, roads laid; farms raised, fields tilled, crops grown and harvested;
the landscape constantly changes as does our perception
of our place in it.

These large Aerials move from chaos to order as I explore ideas and possibilities, adding and removing throughout the process. I want to leave traces of the choices I have made and give an idea of passing time and the changing landscape.

In the following video I begin to work again on a 36 x 48 from the series I started about 4 years ago. I found that as I progressed in the series, traditional ideas of perspective crept in and the paintings started to move more toward the representational than I would have liked.

With these paintings, I am trying to hold on to the two-dimensional surface, while suggesting depth with the brushstrokes, color, and light. Many elements of traditional perspective are hinted at but I try to push them back - hoping that the ideas slowly reveal themselves throughout viewing.

In this first part I am working against the elements of curvature and aerial perspective. I am laying in first lines and ideas in black, in the second part I'll begin to add color. As the painting progresses, farms, fields, roads, hills, tracks, signs, and fence posts will come and go, and I will try to capture that sense of passing time and memories, hopefully leaving a feeling of humanity, of man's struggle with himself and the earth.
